Dolphy (Contributed photo)(UPDATE) The demise of Comedy King Dolphy meant not only the end of a life well-lived but officially closed the book on an era of classic comedians who magnified our idea of what being really funny is.
Today, a new breed counts on sarcasm and insult to elicit laughs. Just take the acts in comedy clubs who intimidate the audience into being part of their comedy routine.
So, there was extra poignancy in Malacañang declaring Friday, July 13 as National Day of Remembrance for Dolphy.
He stood tall among all gifted comedians—eight of whom are featured here and preceded the Comedy King in the hereafter.
Their legacy is captured in scratchy, low-def movies that rerun on TV. And though many of them were undeniably funny, they were also made fun of because of their physical characteristics.
